Beat Making - Drums For Beginners

by Rhapsodist

There is one thing that just about every single beat has: drums. Drums are the first thing enter your sound library; It was the first thing I added to my sound library. There are many drum kits out there, which most are named after big name producers, like Kanye West, Dr. Dre, ect. The nice thing about having these kits is that your beats might start to sound similar to these producers. The obvious con is that it will not sound original. Also, you'll realize that these kits have old sounds. Drum kits are a great place to begin, but as you continue on your journey as a beat maker, you'll want to stay away from these, or use them as little as possible in your beats.

The best way to go here is get a drummer. Record your own drum sounds and use them in your instrumentals. Most don't have access to a drum set, or don't have the cash to hire a drummer, so the next best thing to do is sample your sounds. Find some drums in songs and chop these up and add it to your sound library. Drums are everywhere so keep an eye out for them and add them to your own library as you find them. You'll find these will feel much more live and crisp than the big name producer drum libraries. Some producers just loop a break drum and place their other sounds on top of it; A very simple approach, but most of the time these drums sound better than anything you build from a regular drum kit.

Stay away from those big name drum libraries. There are some excellent drum kits out there and I encourage you to use them, but do not depend on these. Chances are you won't find many great libraries. The great ones you do come across, other people have got to them before you. So build your own drum library; this way you'll have a whole library of drums you like, and your beats will sound alot better. Remember that drums are the most significant part of your beat, so you want your drums to sound excellent.
