A snare drum is a common drum in orchestral, bands, and jazz music, it has got two heads. The name snare comes from the rawhide strings that are stretched across the lower head. It was originally called the side drum because the musician would hold it on his waist and play it off to the side. The shape of a is cylindrical. The drum can be played by the drum stick or by any other form of beater like brushes or rutes; they produce a soft vibrating sound from the wires. If the drummer is using a stick he can strike on the head of the drum, the rim or shell. The snares can also be shut off in case the drummer wants to produce a different sound.

Snare drums may be made of wood, metal or acrylic materials. Typically the diameter of a is 14 inches. For any drummer the is the most important in his drum kit. This drum is not just played the most number of times but it also helps the audience and other group members to clearly listen to the beats in all the noise in the auditorium.

Drums with smaller diameter sound higher than drum having larger diameters. A standard is 5 to 5.5" deep .the depth of a simply refers to its height when it is placed on the ground.

Drums which are deeper will have lower pitch. The shell material of the drum can be wood or metal. It can be made of woods like maple, birch and mahogany. African bubinga, walnut and bamboo are also being considered for making drums. It can be made of metal like steel, brass, aluminum and copper. Metals produce harsher tones while woods produce a much warmer tones.
