Setting Up And Tuning Your Drums Guide For The Youngest Drummers Out There Part One

By: Ronald Black

Once you find the spot in your house or garage where you're going to set up your kit, take some time to locate or go out and buy a rug to put down on that spot where your kit is going to be. The best kind of rug to use will have rubber on the bottom and rug on the top. Next time you walk into a restaurant, check out the rug that you're supposed to wipe your feet on when you walk in. You do wipe your feet, don't you? Of course you do. Not the welcome mat that's outside, but the rug that's just inside. That's the kind of rug I'm talking about, Unless you walk into the only restaurant in the world that doesn't have the kind of rug I'm talking about and you think I'm crazy.

What's he talking about now? You can find these rugs at Home Depot or a similar store. They shouldn't be too expensive. Get the size that looks as if it will be big enough to set up your drums, obviously. You use a rug for two reasons. The first reason is because if you set up drums on a wood floor with no rug under them, they will slide all over the place when you play them, driving you crazy. If you ever take your drums out of the house to set them up somewhere else, always and I mean always take your rug with you. Treat it as the most important part of your kit. I guarantee you, the first time you don't bring your rug will end up being the one time that you definitely need it. Bring it every single time, or else you'll be frantically searching around for a nearby restaurant from which you can "borrow" one.

There might already be a rug or carpeting on the floor where you're going to set up your kit, which might make you wonder whether you still need a special drum rug. You do, and here's why. Drumming can be messy. Oil might drip from your pedal onto the rug; those little wood chips that I talked about before might be flying around and landing on the rug; and blood, sweat, and tears might even fly if you're really rocking out. Or you just might spill your drink. Your mom or significant other will not be happy when he or she sees what rocking out has done to their carpet or rug. Your days of rocking might come to a sudden halt, and your days of vacuuming the rug will begin. Be a considerate drummer and use your own rug.

Before you start to set up your kit, locate the drum key among the pile of shiny metal stuff. You'll need this small tool for a couple of things. You never want to be without one of these around, and you probably shouldn't have just one. if you lose the one that you have, you'll absolutely have to go out to the music store and get another one, so I would suggest that the next time you're near the music store, you go in and get an extra one or two, whether you need one or not.
